Create a Custom Spelling List

LiteracyPlanet enables teachers to create their own spelling lists. The lists may be used as part of a class theme (Halloween, the Olympics), or simply for adding a few advanced words to enhance a student's vocabulary. Once you've created your list, you can then assign the list to your students.

  1. Make your way to Teaching » Custom Spelling
  2. Click the green button and select New List
  3. You are now able to add Individual Words or Bulk Import

Individual Words

  1. Search all available words, blends or digraphs to filter them
  2. Select words from the available words list by clicking on them.
  3. The chosen words automatically move into your "My words" spelling list
  4. Give the list a name
  5. Tick the Share List check box if you want to share the list with other teachers in your school
  6. Select the Save button to finish

If a word is not available, the page will automatically prompt you to Request this word.

Bulk Import

Bulk imports are ideal if you have a list of words, and they are already on the computer.

  1. Copy your existing list of words (it could be a list sent via email, chat, inside a word document)
  2. Paste the list into the existing text box
  3. Click the Import button
  4. Give the list a name
  5. Tick the Share List check box if you want to share the list with other teachers in your school
  6. Select the Save button to finish

If a word you've attempted to import does not exist, you will be prompted to request the word.
Note that the successful words are added the list.

Requesting a word

When requesting a word, please ensure:
  • The word is found in a dictionary;
  • The spelling is correct; and,
  • A context sentence is added (for example, "Read" - "The girl read a story about a puppy dog."). Context sentences enable a student to distinguish between homophones, homonyms and to play games using the sentence itself.
